The gravest and rarest bondage — and the domain of the Church's solemn Rite of Exorcism.
The Third Degree · possessio
“And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.”Mark 1 : 25–26
Possession is the rarest and most severe form of demonic activity — so rare that most faithful priests will never encounter a genuine case in a lifetime of ministry. In it, the enemy takes control of the body of a person against their will, able at moments to act and speak through them while suppressing the person's own faculties. The Gospels record Our Lord confronting it directly, and by His authority casting out the unclean spirits with a word.
It must be said clearly and at once: possession is exceedingly uncommon, and the Church approaches every claim of it with grave caution and rigorous discernment. The signs that once were sensationalized are, in reality, evaluated slowly, prayerfully, and always alongside competent medical and psychological examination. What follows is offered for understanding, not for self-diagnosis.
The Roman Ritual names certain marks that, taken together and after every natural explanation has been excluded, may indicate genuine possession. No single sign suffices; discernment belongs to the Church alone.
Speaking or understanding languages the person has never learned, with fluency that cannot be naturally accounted for.
Revealing distant or hidden things — matters the person could have no natural way of knowing.
Strength or abilities far beyond the person's age, condition, and natural capacity.
Violent, marked aversion to God, to holy things, to blessed objects and sacred names — often concealed until confronted.
This is the work of the Church, never of the individual
The solemn Rite of Exorcism is reserved to a priest expressly appointed by the diocesan bishop, acting under his authority and in accordance with the Church's law and ritual. It is never to be attempted privately, by the laity, or by any minister without that mandate. If you or someone you know may be affected, the right and only path is to contact your parish priest, who will bring the matter to the proper authority in the diocese. Approach this subject with sobriety and without fear — Christ has already won the victory.
Whatever the enemy's power, it is finite, permitted, and already conquered. The name of Jesus commands the unclean spirits; they cannot stand against Him. The Church exorcises not by her own strength but by the authority of her Lord, who despoiled the powers of darkness upon the Cross. Even in the face of the gravest bondage, the Christian does not despair, for the outcome of the war is not in doubt.
This is why the ministry is named as it is. No degree of the enemy's assault — from the lightest temptation to the heaviest possession — is beyond the reach of the redemption won for us. In Christ the captive is set free.
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”John 8 : 36
